In honor of this 82nd anniversary of D-Day, I thought I’d share a few pictures from the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA.

In 1996, 20 years ago, President Bill Clinton signed legislation that officially designated the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford as “the nation’s monument to D-Day.”

A year later,

Hundreds, including D-Day and World War II veterans, gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony on Veterans Day 1997. The Memorial would be built upon consecrated earth, a mixture of sand from the coast of Normandy and Bedford soil. The Foundation unveiled the Memorial’s first sculpture on Memorial Day 1999. The Overlord Arch, the signature monument, was under construction by spring 2000, in time for the dedication of the Memorial’s first phase that Memorial Day. On June 6, 2001, Bob Slaughter [founding committee member and D-Day Veteran] stood beside a second American president as George W. Bush dedicated the National D-Day Memorial on the invasion’s 57th anniversary.

It’s truly a spectacular tribute to all those who sacrificed so much for our freedom. I really wish I could find more of the pictures we’ve taken there, though photos can’t do it justice. If you have a chance to visit, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

May we never forget the “heroes who faced insurmountable odds to secure freedom for the world.”

Nice to see monument. I’ve seen the ones in D.C. but not any others. I went to D.C. every month to see my Lyme doctor and David took some great photos since I stayed in bed during the 3 day trip. They are all so moving.

I agree Mel — they ARE all moving. I really wish I could find some more of my photos of this one — I have a bunch, but I may not have transferred them all when I switched computers last year. I hope you have a great weekend!

I have more but they were lost when I bought the new computer. He also took photos of some cool building like the Old Federal Building with is beautiful.

thank you for the post and photos to remember and honor those who gave all. Thankful for a memorial to educate those who were born after WWIi but also to help families and friends known their loved one’s sacrifice is not forgotten. .

I just wish I could find more of the photos I know I have somewhere…. You make such a great point about the memorial being both an educational tool and a reminder to families and friends those who served and the sacrifices they made are not forgotten.

I visited the one in Bedford last year. I had never heard of it until I made a trip to visit family who lived near by. It tells the story of so much loss and makes me thankful.

I’m so glad you had the opportunity to go Diana! Wasn’t it an inspiring experience? I’m with you — I’m so grateful for those who were willing to stand for what was right and procure freedom for so many. On another note, I hope you had a chance to eat at Liberty Station while you were there in Bedford. We love to go there for lunch when we’re up there.

Hear, hear, Terri. Thanks for shedding light on those that sacrificed to give us what we have today. In this day and age, a lot of the younger generation do not realize what this country went through so that the future generations can have the lifestyle that they have today. I was lucky to understand that from my father, who was drafted into the army as well as my grand-uncles who fought in the past wars.

It’s so important to learn from our previous generations, isn’t it? They have so much wisdom to share, and they really have paved the way for the rest of us. Blessings to you Mark!

I’d love to hear your thoughts!
